Run To Read

Join School District 54 and Hurley & Volk Orthodontics in supporting literacy and promoting health and fitness for the young and old by participating in the 12th annual Run to Read. All proceeds for the event will be used to purchase books for classroom libraries.

Time

  • 7-8:30 a.m.:  Race-day registration and packet pick-up in the school gym. You must register for the 5K by 8 a.m.
  • 7:30 a.m.:  Mascot Races
  • 8 a.m.:  100-yard dash starts for children in 1st grade and under
  • 8:20 a.m.:  400-yard dash starts for children in 6th grade and under
  • 8:45 a.m.:  5K starts
  • 9 a.m.:  1-mile walk starts
  • 10 a.m.:  5K award ceremony in the gym

Course/Times

The 5K (3.1 mile) run takes place on a USATF-certified course (IL-07023-JW) over mostly flat roads. The start and finish are at Dirksen School. Split times will be called out at the 1-, 2- and 3-mile marks. ABSOLUTELY NO bicycles, skates, scooters, wheeled vehicles or pets are allowed on the 5K run or the walk. While police and volunteers will be on the route supporting runners, the roads for the walk and the 5K road are open to traffic. Participants are advised to stay to the left side of the road (facing traffic). The 100-yard and 400-yard dashes are run on park property.

Directions and Parking

Dirksen School is located at 116 W. Beech Drive in Schaumburg. From Interstate 90 exit at Roselle Road south, go past Schaumburg Road. Turn right on Beech Drive. Parking is also available in the Town Square parking lot, at the corner of Schaumburg and Roselle roads.

Packet Pickup

Race day packet pickup and registration will be held in the Dirksen School gym, 16 Beech Drive in Schaumburg. Participants who registered by Sept. 21 will also be able to pick up their packets from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23, and from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24 at Dick Pond Athletics, 1772 W. Algonquin Road in Hoffman Estates. Thank you to Dick Pond for hosting.

Water Stations/Restrooms

There will be a water station in the gym and another on the course. Restrooms will be available in the school.

Awards (5K only)

Awards will be presented at 9:40 a.m. in the Dirksen gym to the top male and female winner and the top 3 men and women in each of these age groups: 10 and under, 11-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 and over. All children in the sprint races and 5K will receive a medal. 5K winners may pick up their medal at the District Office (between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday-Friday) if they choose not to stay for the ceremony. Drawing

All participants will receive a free drawing ticket in their goody bags, for a chance to win great prizes. Winning names will be pulled at 9 a.m. and posted in the gym.

Special Needs

We welcome all individuals with special needs. Please contact the race director in advance if you require special accommodations.

Refund Policy

As there are expenses we incur regardless of whether people race, refunds will not be granted. However, if you register, but don’t attend the race, you may contact the race director by Oct. 4 to pick up your goody bag and T-shirt.

Photo Permission

Photos will be taken of participants and may be used in District 54 printed materials and/or on the website to promote the Run to Read. Participants who do not want their picture used, must contact race director Terri McHugh at (847) 357-5028 or TerriMcHugh@sd54.org.
